CSF ß-endorphin and ß-lipotropin in Alzheimer's disease and multi-infarct dementia

Raimo Sulkava, Timo Erkinjuntti and Timo Laatikainen

Department of Neurology, and Department I of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Helsinki, Finland.

We measured CSF levels of the opioid peptides ß-endorphin and ß-lipotropin in patients with Alzheimer's disease, multi-infarct dementia and controls. In both dementia moups, the mean concentration of ß-endomhin was significantly lower than in controls. The mean ß-lipotropin levels did not differ significantly in the two groups. The low CSF ß-endorphin level may relate generally to dementia.
