B. Giordani, J. C. Sackellares, S. Miller, S. Berent, T. Sutula, M. Seidenberg, T. J. Boll, D. O'Leary and F. E. Dreifuss

From the University of Michigan Medical Center (Drs. Giordani, Sackellares and Berent) Ann Arbor, MI; Veterans Home of California (Dr. Miller) Yountville, CA; Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Medical Center (Dr. Berent), Ann Arbor; University of Virginia Medical Center (Drs. Sutula and Dreifuss) Charlottesville, VA; University of Missouri Medical School (Dr. Seidenberg), Columbia, MO; University of Alabama in Birmingham (Dr. Boll), Birmingham, AL; and The Chicago Medical School (Dr. O'Leary), North Chicago, IL.

Tests of cognitive, perceptual, motor, and memory function were administered to patients with refractory seizures before and after intensive treatment on a specialized epilepsy unit. Improved test performance related to withdrawal of barbiturates and an overall reduction in the number of antiepileptic drugs but not with reduction of seizure frequency.
