Chronic spinal muscular atrophy and pallidonigral degeneration

Report of a case

Georges T. Serratrice, MD, Maurice Toga, MD and Jean F. Pellissier, MD

Chu de la Timone. Marseille, France.

A 54-year-old woman without family history of neurologic disease developed proximal limb weakness, wasting, and fasciculation associated with histologic and EMG evidence of denervation. An extrapyramidal syndrome was characterized by tremor, akinesia, and rigidity. After 11 years, autopsy showed neuronal loss in the anterior horns of the spinal cord, pallidum, and substantia nigra. This pattern of chronic spinal pallidonigral degeneration has not been reported previously.

Accepted for publication June 24, 1982.
